New Evidence Supports the Existence of Swiffie, the Swift Creek Monster

New photographic evidence brought forward by the Swift Creek Monster Research Group is said to show evidence of a large reptilian creature that inhabits Swift Creek Reservoir.

The first reported sighting of the Swift Creek Monster, or “Swiffie” as it is colloquially known, was by a construction worker in 1977. He reported seeing “a giant lizard-like beast with great horns and a hump upon its back.” Several early residents of Brandermill reported similar sightings, though the description of the monster always varies.

The most bizarre account comes from Carole Sealegs, who claims to have encountered Swiffie while sailing. Her sloop capsized during a sudden gale. Struggling to right her boat and climb back aboard, she reported that “a large creature emerged from the water, set my boat upright with its flippers, and nudged me back into my craft.” Before the creature returned to the depths of the reservoir, it reportedly winked at her and nodded its head.

A survey in Brandermill Magazine reported that 36% of residents believe in Swiffie’s existence. Bumper stickers with an artist’s rendition of the monster and the slogan “I Believe” can be seen on many vehicles throughout the community. The popular “Free Swiffie” campaign was used by the environmental group Swift Creek Green to bring light to several ecological issues in the reservoir.

While the new photo of the monster is not particularly convincing, it seems to have reignited interest in Swiffie. Many residents are spending their weekends with cameras fixed on the reservoir, hoping to catch a glimpse. We at the Beacon salute them. After all, couldn’t we all benefit from a little hope?
